The shadows crowd behind me as the fierce beast pushes me away from its side.
I would like to descend those stairs and confront the asphalt river that flows behind the last step, putting distance between me and the woman I love.
I feel the cold wind coming through the windows as the beast roars with fury, advancing relentlessly. I look back for a moment and can still see her. Her brown eyes look at me and her face smiles at me. I can almost hear her voice saying, “Goodbye… go with care.”
I would like to escape from there, from my own destiny. Jump through the door, throwing myself to fate. Feel the pain of the stone and the glass lacerating my skin. Feel myself falling and rolling down the road while the monster, ignorant of my absence, continues on its way.
I rise with my bloodied body and run back toward where she is, embracing her while I swear to her that never, never will I leave her side.
But I am prey to my own fears, I am afraid of the future and of an uncertain destiny. I fear that death will tear me away from her side forever.
I keep looking at her and can only try to smile and wave goodbye with a signal from my hand.
Tomorrow I will return to her, boarding the roaring metal beast as it travels the asphalt with its rubber claws. Tomorrow I will be with her until the darkness of night separates us again.
I remain looking until the darkness obscures her figure and her face disappears into the distance.
I sit next to a stranger and close my eyes, dreaming of the day everything will be different.
